COCKPIT_HOME changes global roots whose defaults differ across services. Do not assume all state is in one folder. Interface projects and the instance's initial persistence root are also distinct.
For consistent backups, pause missions, stop agents and the server, then copy the project, .cockpit/, associated worktrees, and configured global directories. Preserve Git links between base and worktrees. Transcripts and connections may contain sensitive information; protect backups.
#Updates
Stop the server before replacing builds. Check local changes and update without an implicit merge:

Resolve divergence or local changes first; do not force-reset to update. Back up before version changes. No universal migration script is declared.
Remove npm link links with npm unlink -g @cockpit/core. Deleting the checkout or data is separate: check backups, sessions, and worktrees before removing folders.
